The mission of the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center is to educate the public about the history, cultures and contemporary lives of California Indians and to honor their contributions to civilization.

We are creating an issues-based, multi-media museum that tells the stories of California Indians--past, present and future--from a Native perspective.

The Protecting Our Legacies Project seeks to increase tribal museum professional capacity in government to government relations. The project targets consultation and coordination skills development for California tribal museum personnel in becoming more effective cultural advocates and liaisons over a 24 month period.Liaison skills are a critical issue for California tribes because the majority of California tribal cultural wealth and materials is not within tribal control and is not always cared for or used in a manner that reflects historical accuracy and/or cultural identity. Thus, it is important that tribal museum professionals use available resources to increase cultural sensitivity and promote cooperative loans and exhibitions that portray native perspectives to the general public.
